It's 10:35am on a Saturday morning. You wake up in a strange place. Everything hurts, and you can't remember why. As you piece together last night, you realize that the window to order McDonald's breakfast is now closed. Crap. Your stomach is empty, and is craving hash brown patties. Suddenly, you realize that you have some rudimentary motor skills left in your arms. Also, there's a stray potato floating in the bathtub. Why is it there? Who cares! Time to make 'em yourself!

Hash Brown Patties

Prep Time: 35 min.
Cook Time: 15 min.

Ingredients

  • 1 potato
  • butter or cooking oil
  • salt
  • pepper
  • dried onion flakes (optional)
  • garlic powder (optional)

Tools Required

  • vegetable shredder/grater
  • burger patty forming tool

Directions

  1. Bring a saucepan of water to a rolling boil, just enough to cover the potato.
  2. Boil the potato for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Immediately transfer the potato to an ice bath for about 10 minutes to halt the cooking process. You want the potato to be slightly cooked, yet still very firm throughout.
  4. Dry and peel the potato.
  5. Using a large-holed cheese or vegetable grater, grate the potato into wide shreds.
  6. Spread the potato shreds out on a large surface, and liberally apply salt, pepper and seasonings as desired.
  7. Using a patty press, mash the shreds into 4-5 burger patty shapes.
  8. Add 3-4 pats of butter or cooking oil to a large skillet on medium-high heat.
  9. Cook the potato patties on one side for 7-8 minutes. Do not move them around. We want a crisp outer crust to form.
  10. Add more butter or oil to the tops of the patties, and flip them to cook the second side for an additional 7-8 minutes.
