When should I feed my Dog?
A: Depends!
Congratulations! You are em'bark'ing on a new chapter of your life, one of being a dog owner! But first, there are many important facts to consider, as owning a dog will completely alter your daily routine and lifestyle.
Am I prepared to be a dog owner? The first thing you should ask yourself is the level of commitment that you would have to your pet. Dogs can live for anywhere from 8-15 years and longer, and if your lifestyle does not accommodate that type of commitment, then maybe dog ownership isn't right for you.
Are my family & house dog-ready?Consider your living space and family members/roommates when adopting a dog. Large dogs that need exercise are not ideal for city/apartment living, and certain breeds are not suitable for all types of families, especially those with small children, or those with special needs. Take into consideration your yard space, or the availability of dog runs/parks that you will be frequenting daily. Remove items from your home that could be hazardous to a curious dog.
Prepare for the first dayBefore you bring your new dog home, you must prepare some things first. Buy a dog bed so it has a place to call its own in your home. Get a dog bowl or dish, and some toys. Be sure to buy a collar and leash! You will need some way to control your new pet before it is trained properly. Locate your nearest veterinarian and save their phone number. Remember to register your pet, and have their ID noted on their collar if they get lost.
The second day and beyondLove your pet! It's entire life is in your capable hands, so treat it well, and your life will be rewarded with love and health benefits, too! (Dog owners tend to live longer than non-dog owners.) Feed your pet according to duietary guideleines, and always supply fresh water everyday. Prepare a schedule so that your pet develops a routine that it can rely on for food time and bathroom trips outside.
