The Life of the Artist

Salvador Dalí was born May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Spain. His father, Salvador Dalí y Cusi, was a middle class lawyer and notary. Salvador's father had a strict disciplinary approach to raising children—a style of child-rearing which contrasted sharply with that of his mother, Felipa Domenech Ferres. Through their guidance and lack thereof, they helped to shape the surrealist the world knows today.

Salvador Dalí's artistic talent was prevalent at a very young age, and his gift was nutured throughout his life. School begat fame, and then begat a forced leave from the Surrealist Scene, which did nothing to deter Dalí from creating. He created artwork almost his entire life, on through to the 1980s. His catalog of media includes much more than paintings, as he worked in literature, theatre, design, film, and sculpture. Never content with simply creating art, he was a self-promoting machine, and constantly interjected his likeness into everything that he created.
