Mae West Lips Sofa
Salvador Dali was fascinated by Hollywood celebrity life, and in particular, the actress Mae West. In his famous painting entitled Il volto di Mae West" (1934-35), Dali deconstructs the movie star as theatre elements—framed paintings as eyes, a table and clock for her nose, and a red couch as her mouth and lips. After experiencing some financial difficulty in 1936, he collaborated with Edward James to produce five actual couches from the painting. A wooden frame covered in pink satin, this couch is not meant to be used, as Dali was known to create physical artwork based on the form, and not the function.
